The Big Questions of Life

A magical, subtly humorous novel in which succulents play only a minor role. The work is about, among other things, the oldest succulent in the world . The author is himself a collector and as such is our customer.

After his last botanical expedition, Mr. Maria is in quarantine, threatened by a fatal disease. The retired widower and lover of exotic plants wants to use the time he has left to sort out his life. In keeping with the motto "Death is the signpost of philosophy," he writes down the key moments of his life, armed with a pot of black tea and a bright green lime. These are commented on by email by a hired philosopher who shows Mr. Maria the way of thinking.

"In the evenings he would think about what stories he wanted to write the next day. The rest of the time he would devote to his succulent plants, prepare special soil mixtures, replace pots that had become too small with larger ones and be happy about every new leaf and flower."

The lovable, quirky protagonist embarks on a journey to the great themes of philosophy in order to ultimately understand himself and the world a little better.
